I just realized that in the crazy bustle of the holidays last year, I never shared with you the amazing story of meeting Kagan Massey, Miss Turquoise Circuit 2014! What is Miss Turquoise Circuit? She is a rodeo queen and an ambassador for the sport and also her specific rodeo. The PRCA is broken up into Circuits to help group regional areas and competitions. The Turquoise Circuit is comprised of Arizona & New Mexico–two states that are very close to my heart!
Last October at the Turquoise Circuit Finals, the Miss Turquoise Circuit pageant was happening. I am sponsoring the MTC organization with all of her professional promotional images and her autograph sheet designs! I really wanted to be at the finals, but I was in Georgia at the Pursuit 31 Conference. Since I couldn’t be in two places at once, we had to coordinate a time for Kagan to come out here for her shoot. We picked a day in November that we could cram into her already busy schedule, booked her tickets, and we were so excited about her session!!
That was the ONE day in November that we had torrential rain! The day before was beautiful, the day after was gorgeous… but we had ONE day and it was raining non-stop! Kagan was a trooper and never complained (even when it was freezing and she was posing in the drizzle and cold!) We were lucky enough to be able to use a friend’s pecan orchard in Dragoon that morning and we got some absolutely gorgeous images!!
The rain finally let loose and we had to pack it up. We drove back to my house in Sierra Vista under a torrential downpour the entire time. We were getting discouraged, but hoped there would be a break in the rain. After a quick stop for some Mexican food (chile rellenos make everything better!), we came back to the house to reset her hair and pray for some sunshine.
Kagan was so much fun to hang out with! We enjoyed getting to know her and she played with my boys (who quickly had a crush on the pretty rodeo queen) while we watched water pour from the sky. Without much notice, we had some sunshine break through the clouds. As quick as we could, we dashed outside and grabbed some of my favorite images right here in my front yard!
Part of our time together was spent designing her autograph cards she uses throughout the year! We had so much fun trying to choose images–with texts and phone calls back and forth to the director and Kagan’s mom to get votes on favorite images, playing in photoshop to see how things looked, then scrapping it and starting all over when we fell in love with a different picture. Here is the final product!
Kagan is an amazing young lady with a very bright future. It was a tremendous honor to host her in our home and to capture these images for her! To keep up with her travels, check out the Miss Turquoise Circuit Facebook page. I’m excited to support the Miss Turquoise Circuit organization. This year, I will be at the finals and the winner will have her new heashots done right there in Las Cruces!
